The Kirch Conference, presented annually to honor Andrew J. Kirch, brings information about developmental disabilities to individuals with disabilities, their families, and the professionals who work with them. This year’s conference focuses on wellness and developing healthy lifestyles for transition age individuals with developmental disabilities. The Golisano Foundation is pleased to sponsor the keynote speaker, Timothy Shriver, Ph.D., who will focus on health and wellness for athletes with developmental disabilities. Shriver, Chairman of the Special Olympics for 14 years, serves 3.1 million Special Olympics athletes and their families in 175 countries. He has helped transform Special Olympics into a movement that focuses on respect, acceptance, and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities in all corners of the globe. Project SEARCH Celebrates Launch, Rochester Expansion
November 20, 2009 -- Program Helps Young Adults with Developmental Disabilities Transition to Work World
John Dasfais wants a job. The 21-year-old Spencerport student, who has a developmental disability, wants to earn a paycheck and, hopefully, move out on his own. And he’s on the road to doing that through a new program called Project SEARCH at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Read more

Tom Golisano Donates $10.2 Million to Assure Continued Support for Programs and Services for People with Developmental Disabilities
Ann Costello, Director of the Golisano Foundation, announced today the receipt of the Foundation’s largest gift, $10.2 million given by founder Tom Golisano. This gift is also the largest Golisano has made to any organization since 2002, when he donated $14 million to Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Read more

The Key of G Rochester Film Premiere is Monday, May 11 -- Explores the Relationship Between a Young Man with Severe Disabilities and and His Artist and Musician Caregivers

April 22, 2009-- The Institute for Innovation Transition, a collaboration of the Golisano Foundation and the University of Rochester, will showcase The Key of G, an award-winning documentary about disability, caregiving, and interdependence and a disabled man's transition into adulthood. Director Robert Arnold tells the story of Gannet Hosa-Betonte (or "G," as his friends call him), a 22-year-old man with physical and developmental disabilities, as he moves out of his mother's home for the first time to share a new home with three artists and musicians who support him, not only as primary caregivers, but also as friends. Together, they create a uniquely successful model of supported living and a compelling alternative to institutionalized care. NYS Institute for Health Transition Training Launches New Web Site

March 3, 2009 -- Be sure to explore this new Web site, an interactive curriculum and toolkit for youth with developmental disabilities ages 14-25 years, family caregivers, and health care providers. The site was developed in partnership by Golisano Children's Hospital at Upstate, Upstate Medical University and NYS Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC). It seeks to raise awareness for developmental disabilities, improve communication, and build effective partnerships during the transition from pediatric to adult health care. Read more

Annual Message from Ann Costello, Foundation Director

December 31, 2008 -- As I look back on 2008, I reflect on another year of exciting programs and impressive public policy initiatives for individuals with developmental disabilities. The highlights were many, and included the launch of the Institute for Innovative Transition at the University of Rochester’s Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) at Golisano Children’s Hospital, a Pet-assisted therapy program offered by Lollypop Farm, drama and music therapy classes, a variety of summer camp programs and expanded recreational opportunities, among others. A partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Center, Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community Series is week-long outreach initiative designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with disabilities.At the heart of this initiative is programming, broadcast on WXXI-TV, WXXI-HD, City 12 and AM 1370/HD91.5-2, that celebrates the amazing lives of people with disabilities. Dialogue on Disability runs January 11 through 17. See information
