About the Award
News Release

GedroMary Kate Gedro is a senior staff orthotist at the University of Rochester Medical Center who specializes in working with children. Mary Kate earned her Bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary and went on to complete her orthotics certification at the Newington Children’s Hospital and the University of Connecticut. She did her residency at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. She specializes in helping children with scoliosis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, developmental delay and any medical issue that impedes children’s ability to stand or walk.

Through Mary Kate’s involvement with pediatric patients of URMC’s Kirch Developmental Services Center, she was recruited to be involved in the Special Olympics Healthy Athlete’s screening program. Healthy Athlete’s Fit Feet program is often led by a podiatrist, but Mary Kate was a perfect choice because of her medical background and her ability to inspire others to get involved. Not only did she train to run the program, she also recruited volunteers, such as Joshua Olsen,MD. and nurse practitioner Mark Cloninger, and persuaded Southern Prosthetics Supply Company to donate 150 pairs of foot orthoses for athletes at events who need them.

Even though she is a busy clinician and mother, Mary Kate loves giving her time to Special Olympics. “I am very interested in enhancing the well-being of children and adults with intellectual disabilities and the Healthy Athletes screenings are a great way to make a difference.”
